I have been testing multiple sites; sites with tons of backlinks no content and sites with awesome content and no backlinks and found SERPS still overwhelmingly favor backlinks over content despite what they say.

But now I am in a interesting situation, I have a site with beautiful content and I want to see what backlinks will tip it to the first page for the keywords of its domain name. I will publish the results fully in a free e-book but I've decided to add link by link to see how the site fares. The first link I will add will be a no-follow link from wikipedia. I edited a popular wikipedia article on none other then Sylvester Stallone and I want to see how far that will jump me up the rankings.

I have always been really curious about how much Wikipedia links actually help. Since Wikipedia is not like any other site and crappy content will be removed by editors I'm surmising Google and other SERPS will place alot of value on a Wikipedia link even if its no-follow.

Well I'll keep you posted and keep you up to date on that e-book of experiments. Fascinating, fascinating, fascinating is all I gots to say.

So since quitting my 9 to 5 and dedicating myself fully towards learning more about the web I have several projects I've been working on in tandem. I have sites with KICKASS content that is updated on a weekly if not daily basis. I'm talking original content that is quality. I then also have sites that have pretty crappy, "Buy this now!", type of content that is your run of the mill I want to sell something to you. Google claims that original and unique content is all they are looking for. So a site with pure kickass content and no backlinks vs a site with shitty content and tons of backlinks; who gets ranked faster and for how many keywords.

The internet is a shallow and manipulable world my friend.

This actually made me sad, really sad. Being raised in our "democratic" and "captilist" country we are always taught that the great thing about capitalism and democracy is the innovator with the best idea, best price, and best quality always wins. It is the inherent efficiency of that is so innate to the design of the capitalist system they were referring to. But alas that is not true.

In capitalist economies (and I'm not a pinko) it is the product that can manipulate its exposure the most that wins. If you haven't guessed it already, the site with the crappy content but tons of backlinks is FAR outranking the site with the killer content. Obviously backlinks alone won't get you linked but when its a show down between backlinks or content; backlinks wins.

UPDATE

Google just did a PR refresh. Get this; the site with backlinks but crappy content went from PR0 to PR2 in under three months; the site with rocking content is still on page three with PR0 for the exact keywords of its domain (which is RARELY searched). Google just wants unique original content MY ASS.

When buying backlinks its important to know the difference between Page Rank and Authority Rank. Here is a quick paragraph below explaining the difference.

Page rank is important but site authority is more important. Page Rank is what we all know to be that number that signifies how well a site ranks in Google's search algorithm (how old it is, how many backlinks it has, etc.) authority rank is how authoritative it is to Google. A site can have a high page rank but a low authoritative rank. How can this be? Have you ever heard of "Link Juice", alot of myths regarding the term link juice are completely false but what is not is the more spammy links a high PR site puts on it's site the less Google will trust that site. Say a PR5 site links to 1 or 2 disreputable sites...big deal Google will still trust the high PR site. But what if the site links to 10000 low PR sites many of which Google has come to the conclusion are spam sites. The site will still have a high PR rank but a low authoritative rank

I talked about the importance of selecting a keyword rich domain name in some previous posts, and I wanted to follow up with that post discussing some of the pitfalls. Lets revisit the scenario shall we?

You are found a keyword that appears to not be that competitive. Its searched 1,000 times a month yet only a handful of sites are actively competing. The keyword is "Wisconsin Paper Clips". Better yet even though www.WisconsinPaperClips.net/.com/.org are taken www.Wisconsin-Paper-Clips.org isn't! Now your company name is Papaeedo and while you rather would have that as your domain name if are willing to take the Wisconsin-Paper-Clips.org in order to get ranked quicker.

Hold your horses
When multiple domains are competing on a keyword and have been for a while finding a keyword rich domain name doesn't matter as much. Sure it will still help getting you ranked, but you won't get instantly ranked. Good example is this site. When I built it there was no website called BacklinkReviews.com, there was backlinksreviews.com, but that was it. Backlinksreviews.com was an antiquated site (still is) that wasn't used. So I managed to get ranked number 1 for a keyword searched 100 times a month within a month. But if there were 2 or more domain names it really wouldn't have been worth it.

Google loves brands
Creating a brand and getting it ranked for a keyword isn't as hard as it used to be. When trying to get ranked for a keyword you always do it the same way, tell Google who you are. Repeat it in articles, send backlinks with that keyword, and get people talking about it.

SO. The importance of selecting domain names has always gotten alot of traffic, domain name IS important but it isn't the end all be-all. Do you research and see what's out there. You shouldn't have to sacrifice your band name for a crappy domain name with dashes and .us or .info if you don't have to.

Google tried to create incentives for bloggers to link to their new campaign and were punished for 60 days from Google's Matthew Cutts.

What can we learn

Backlinks are still and always will be important

Being a developer as well as a web marketer you just have to put yourself in the position of making a search engine. I cannot envision any feasible scenario whereby I could create a search engine that does not use backlinks. It is simply impossible. Want proof that backlinks are still important? Here it is, Google's own team tried to manipulate rankings using them!

Sandboxing is only temporary

If your site has been sandboxed for keywords, ITS ONLY TEMPORARY. Google probably let itself off a little easier this time but still all sandboxing is TEMPORARY. I always use tracking software (Raven Tools or SEO Moz theres a ton of free ones) to see what I rank for with my keywords. If you just totally fell off the map for a keyword chances are something you did caused you to temporarily be sandboxed for a keyword. Don't panic its only temporary.

The most fundamental rule in Online Marketing

Putting ourselves back into the role of a programmer. The only type of thing that will get you and your site ranked is one that is not easily reproducible. That is the fundamental rule in backlinking or any type of ranking strategy to get you or your product or service ranked. Creating backlinks that are reproducible will help a little but are nothing compared to quality hard to get links.
Well ladies and gentlemen that is your backlink news for the day!

One of the sites I have been working on has been getting about 300 unique hits in monthly traffic. I went online to see exactly what it was for and I was surprised it was for none of the keywords I had made hundreds of backlinks for.

Since the site is not mine and a client's I'll switch the words around to make it anonymous.

I had made over 200 backlinks on directory sites, blog comments, social media sites, mostly follow links, for the keywords "Hat Maker", "Pacific Hat Maker", and "Hat Maker Pacific"....All keywords were highly competitive and being competed on actively by 10+ companies. My domain name was also "www.pacifichatmaker.com" and finally the keyword "Pacific Hat Maker" is searched approximately 5,000 times monthly.

I know thats alot of info so I'll sum it up.

Keyword "Pacific Hat Maker" searched 5,000 times

I made backlinks for the following keywords "hat maker", "pacific hat maker", and "hat maker pacific"

keywords were actively competitive and being targeted by 10+ companies

I owned killer domain name, www.pacifichatmaker.com

Now get this right. After setting up these backlinks creating targeted content for the backlinks etc. the site never seemed to penetrate the 20's and 30's for Google's rank. I started building more content thinking that I could only go so far with backlinks alone.

Yesterday I began analyzing the Google Analytics account information. I found nearly all of our traffic was coming from "pencil factory" which is a factory in the pacific hat making region. I didn't make ANY backlinks for this keyword. What I was surprised to find out was, a high PR high traffic blog either on accident or because they came across our site posted a link back for that keyword. That one link got us nearly 3,000 unique hits, over $1,000 in sales, and ranked number one for one specific keyword that gets about 300 uniques a month.

Now I know its obvious, quality over quantity, (I even wrote a post about that) but the fact is I believe with Google's Panda update there was a complete revision. I use www.opensiteexplorer.com to analyze my backlinks and competitors backlinks (there's a ton of different tools out there). What I have noticed is that if a site's trusted rank is not above a certain threshold the backlink holds no relevance. However if the backlink is above a certain threshold of trust ranking in Google's algorithm that alone can rank a site for an important keyword. I'm going to publish the results in an e-book backed by solid proof online.

If you think about it, its really obvious what will win with Google's search engine. Easily reproducible items will never win in attaining rank. Anyone can post a backlink in a directory. Hard to reproduce items like original content, hard to come by links, anything difficult to obtain and not easily reproducible will always gain rank. Its that simple.

Below I will list a listing of all places I know to manually submit do follow backlinks. Please comment below if you know more places to add in and help build this page. I will keep updating. If you know of a place where it takes a couple days because they "review" or you have to submit a reciprocal link please do not add those (unless they are super high value).

PR0-PR1 directories - These backlinks are OK for a site you are just starting up but if you are trying to get ranked for a specific keyword they will not be very helpful.

Directories instant (requires e-mail address) but you're listing will appear instantly
